Pilgrimage Days

In the Steps of St Cuthman

Saturday 13 April 11am to 4pm

Retreat Pilgrimage South Downs

A meditative pilgrimage day in Chidham near Chichester reflecting upon on the life of St Cuthman starting and finishing at St Mary's Church, Cot Lane, Chidham PO18 8TA. St Cuthman was born in Chidham in about the year 680AD, during the time of St Wilfrid's mission to evanagelise the South Saxons. St Cuthman is recorded as having worked as a shepherd before setting off east, pushing his mother in a barrow, eventually settling in Steyning and building a church there. The present St Mary's Church at Chidham dates from the 1200s and there is eveidence of Medieval pilgrmages there. A guild of St Cuthman based at Chidham is recorded as paying tax in 1522.

We will meet at 11am at St Mary's Church. Parking is available along Cot Lane PO18 8TA. After initial prayer and meditation in the church we will walk along public footpaths to Cobnor Point, stopping at points along the way for further prayer and reflection, returning to St Mary's for concluding prayer. The distance walked will be about 4 miles. Please wear suitable footwear and clothing and bring a packed lunch. Suggested donation for the day (to include a donation to St Mary's and pilgrmage booklet) £10.

Prayer of St Cuthman

"Father Almighty you have brought my wanderings to an end; now enable me to begin this work. For who am I Lord, that I should build a house to your name. If I rely on myelf it will be of no avail, but it is you who will assist me"

For those people with limited mobility there is an alternative by car available travelling by car from Chidham Village to the start of the wheelkchair accessible path at Cobnor Point. Please enquire.

As St Teresa of Calcutta said

"God is the friend of silence because He is not found in noise and restlessness. The essential thing is not what we say, but what God says to us and through us. Jesus always waits for us in silence, and in this silence He speaks to us. He will speak to our soul and there we will hear His voice."
